My Four Timelines

When I help CEOs lead change, there are four timelines I walk them through:
  1. Immediate Result – What will you do today? Now?
  2. Short-term Wins – What will be your early milestones that generate momentum?
  3. Medium-term Success – How will you hit the bulls eye in 18-24 months?
  4. Long-term Sustainability – How will you build in continuous renewal?

Of these four timelines, #3 is the most important. It is here that you define the bullseye: success. None of the others have meaning unless you know what success is. 18-24 months is the ideal range for achieving significant accomplishments. Define #3 first. Then the others.

What significant success are you aiming for? Define it. When will it take place?
What will you do today?
What milestones are between here and there?

How will you ensure it sustains?

“Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter.”
